They finally came to their senses.

From Hutchnews.com

Ultimate fight may be won

City leaders appear willing to reverse ban on martial arts events

By Edie Ross - The Hutchinson News - eross@hutchnews.com

On Tuesday, city leaders unofficially reversed their December decision upholding a ban on ultimate fighting events.

During a study session, city staff presented the Hutchinson City Council with an idea to allow the event but require event promoters to obtain a license for each one, subject to police approval.

The license requirement would allow the city to set security requirements for the events held at public and private facilities.

It also would allow the police department to review each proposed event and place requirements on the event promoter that they felt were necessary for each specific situation.

The council generally agreed to the idea, but took no official action.

Event promoters Michael Edwards and Michael Grimm attended the meeting and both agreed to the licensing requirements, adding that they looked forward to working with police to ensure the events were safe.

The council will have the opportunity to officially approve an ordinance removing the ban and setting licensing requirements at its Jan. 19 meeting.

The council originally voted to uphold the ban after Police Chief Dick Heitschmidt spoke against the events, citing problems police had with crowds at mixed martial arts, or ultimate fighting, events at the Grand Prairie Hotel and Convention Center earlier this year.

Heitschmidt has concerns about the amount of security provided at fights held at private venues.

Mary Hemmings, manager of Memorial Hall - which event promoters call the "ideal" venue for mixed martial art events - also spoke in opposition to the events.

On Tuesday, Heitschmidt said that if the council adopted the licensing requirement in conjunction with lifting the ban, he was "confident" police would be able to provide the security needed.

"That was my main concern," Heitschmidt said. "And this would allow and actually require us to get involved in the planning of the events from the very beginning."

Hemmings said she was still opposed to the events, but added that she would try to compromise.

"I understand that we might have different philosophical views," Hemmings said. "No matter what good things people say about this, I still think it is putting lipstick on a pig, as the saying goes. However, I understand that life is compromise and if the ban is lifted, I will allow at least one MMA event at Memorial Hall and see how things go.

"No one wants to see Memorial Hall utilized more than me, but we have to determine at what cost we want to see it utilized."

Council members also varied in their support of the event.

Mayor Trish Rose - the council's biggest proponent of the events - said the city should be open to events that are popular among a younger generation.

Rose alone voted against upholding the ban at the December meeting and was the one to request that the issue be revisited after public opposition over the council's original decision.

"We need to be cognizant that young people want more things to do at night in Hutchinson, and I appreciate that there are people willing to bring those events to town."

Once Heitschmidt signed off on the issue, Vice Mayor Bob Bush was inclined to agree with Rose.

Council members Ron Sellers and Cindy Proett were more reserved in their acceptance of the events.

"I'm not opposed to trying this," Sellers said. "I'm pretty much a free-enterprise person. If it can be done safely in our community, then I'm not opposed to allowing it. Whether it is good for society, that is a little hard for me to believe."

Proett added that she would agree to lift the ban on a "trial basis," and if problems arose she'd support dissolution of the ordinance.

Council member David Razo was absent Tuesday.

In other action:

* The council approved its 2008 legislative platform, which will be presented for consideration by the state Legislature in the upcoming session. The platform addresses three issues: the completion of the K-61 project, the restoration of demand transfers, and the city's support of constitutional home rule authority for Kansas cities.

* The council approved an ordinance instituting 2009 fire inspection fees for businesses.

The fees, which apply only to the fire department's initial annual inspection, are as follows: $25 for businesses of less than 5,000 square feet; $50 for businesses of 5,000 to 50,000 square feet; $150 for businesses 50,000 to 100,000 square feet; $200 for businesses over 100,000 square feet.

***

Moneymaker

MMA promoters insist that ultimate fighting events are not only safe and entertaining, but also are good for the community in terms of the revenue generated by each event.

Michael Grimm, with Warfare Xtreme Fighting, estimates that the two MMA events he put on last year each funneled $50,000 into the Hutchinson economy.

The money went to television, radio and newspaper advertising, printing fliers, making signs and banners and employment of about a dozen workers to set up the ring and venue, provide security and other services.

On top of that, Grimm said, the events draw visitors from the surrounding area, and from as far as Kansas City.

Grimm said that once the city officially lifts the ban on MMA events, he hopes to put on four MMA events in 2009.

If you're in the mood for ultimate fighting, it looks like you'll have to go to Wichita or Salina.

The Hutchinson City Council Tuesday voted to continue to prohibit in Hutchinson sports contests regulated by the Kansas Professional Regulated Sports Act, including professional boxing, sparring, kickboxing, mixed martial arts and full-contact karate.

The council voted 4-1 to deny approval of a resolution approving such contests in Hutchinson after Police Chief Dick Heitschmidt and others voiced opposition.

Mayor Trish Rose voted against a motion to deny the request, saying she wanted more time to gather public opinion and to look for ways to mitigate concerns about the rowdy crowds associated with the events.

Councilman Ron Sellers, who said he was unwilling to support a type of event the police chief had concerns with, countered that if there was a public outcry at the council's decision to prohibit the events, the council could take a second look at the issue.

The issue arose after Hutchinson resident Michael Edwards proposed a mixed martial arts event at Memorial Hall in January. Edwards, who has promoted MMA events at the Cotillion Ballroom in Wichita, said the sport is safer for its participants than boxing and is well-regulated by the state.

At the events he's promoted, Edwards said, there were no problems in the ring or in the crowds. He also cited events he had attended at Salina's Bicentennial Center that had "not one problem."

He added that the sport has gained popularity and would be beneficial monetarily for Hutchinson businesses as it would draw in outside visitors.

"It's almost un-American not to allow it," Edwards said. "These events happen across the country and I don't know why they shouldn't happen in Hutchinson."

Heitschmidt and Capt. Troy Hoover both agreed Edwards would put on a good, clean event.

However, they opposed allowing extreme fighting events in Hutchinson because not all promoters would go to the same lengths Edwards does to ensure a safe and professional event.

Hoover recounted problems the police had with two MMA events that took place at the Grand Prairie Hotel and Convention Center over the summer.

These events, while regulated by the state, were not legal in the city because the city had not adopted a resolution approving the holding of such contests.

Police had multiple issues with both events - not with the professional fighters who were fighting inside a cage - but with the large and intoxicated crowds that came to watch the fight.

"Inside the cage is not my concern," Heitschmidt said. "What is outside the cage is my concern. It's safe inside the cage. It's not safe outside the cage - that's my point."

Hoover said the events took several officers off of their regular patrols for several hours. Edwards was not connected to either event.

Mary Hemmings, who as the manager of the Fox Theatre is also contracted with the city to manage Memorial Hall, also spoke in opposition to extreme sports contests, saying they exhibit "base brutality that appeals to an animal nature."

She said the events, if hosted at Memorial Hall, would require extraordinary efforts by staff and would take a toll on the facility because of what she expected would be "unruly" crowds.

City Manager John Deardoff expressed a more supportive opinion, saying the events would provide an opportunity to use Memorial Hall, which he believes is "totally underutilized."

Eight months ago I’d never heard of Demian Maia. Now the guy is running roughshod over the UFC’s middleweight division and is probably the number one contender to Anderson Silva’s title. You might ask; who the hell is this guy? And I might answer; three-time BJJ World Cup champion, two-time BJJ World Champion, and a BJJ Pan American champion in 2006. He then threw his hat into the cage in October 2007 and is now 4-0 with all wins coming via submission.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Maia said immediately following his win at UFC 91 that he would like to fight Mike Bisping. That would be a pretty good fight, one that I think Bisping loses though. Really, I don’t think Maia has to fight Bisping before he gets a title shot, and Bisping should fight some of Mia’s road kill before anything else. Take a look at both fighter last three opponents. Maia: Nate Quarry, Jason MacDonald, Ed Herman. Bisping: Chris Leben, Jason Day, Charles McCarthy.

A Silva/Maia main event isn’t as flashy as the rumored Silva/Liddell fight, but Maia can actually beat Silva. Although Silva has really good Jiu-Jitsu, he’s not a World Champion. If Maia can avoid getting kicked in the face, and take Silva down we might have something. That something might be Silva pulling off another brilliant win, but it would at least be interesting.

What is going to happen in November at UFC 91 when Randy Couture steps into the cage against Brock Lesnar? I think I know what the UFC wants. They want Lesnar to take Couture down, beat him up and become the next UFC champ. The UFC has been setting up Lesnar since his debut earlier this year; he is their new golden child. First they put him up against Frank Mir, a former champion, who they thought might be washed up. Mir proved he still had the heart by staying calm after getting dropped on his head, and submitted the former WWE star. Lesnar came real close to having a notch on his belt of beating a former champion. No problem, the UFC match makers put Lesnar up against a veteran who is recognized as being a legit, tough heavyweight, but has no takedown defense. Heath Herring has never come close to defending a takedown in his life, he was the perfect opponent for Lesnar to lie on and pound for three rounds and the UFC new it. So now Lesnar is a whopping 1-1 in the UFC, and is given a career defining fight against a MMA legend and current UFC heavy weight champion. Dana White’s master plan is nearing completion

Slow down Dana, Couture has other ideas in mind. Being the master strategist that he is, Couture will enter the cage with a well thought out game plan, and extreme confidence to make it work. Will the plan be to stuff takedowns and strike with Lesnar? Maybe, because nobody really knows what kind of striker Lesnar is. I know he has a pretty mean cloths-line, his drop kick is pretty deadly, as well as his open handed chest slap. Other than that, all we got is a good punch that put Herring down but didn’t knock him out. Couture might also be looking to let the fight go to the ground and work submissions. This seems, to me, to be the logical game plan. It could backfire if Lesnar is able to completely control Couture on the ground. Couture’s wrestling ability is in a different league than Herring, so I don’t see Lesnar controlling the whole fight if it goes to the ground. Maybe just 90%, and that’s all the daylight that Couture will need. I’m calling it now; Couture wins via arm bar late in the third round.

www.mmakc.com

Thanks to M1-Global for the info www.m1mixfight.com

<OD>Maktar Gueye (153 lbs) vs. Kim Young-Su (153.7 lbs)</OD>

6 wins 2 loses for Gueye and 11 wins 6 lose for Kim Young Su. Despite the fact that he was far more experienced Young Su lost the fight. 1.02 minute of the first round needed Gueye to deliver some gruesome body punches which finished Kim Young Su. This earned him the bonus of 500 US dollars that was promised for the most spectacular Knockout of the evening.

<OD>Farouk “Paco” Lakebir ( 167.3 lbs) vs. Kim Do-Hyung (167.2 lbs) </OD>

A very very exciting fight which ended in a draw. Although most thought that Lakebir would take the decision after the extra round the American judges still did not agree on who should be the winner and because the IMA was dependent on them for the future and endless discussions should be avoided, it was decided to fight another extra round. Even after this round it took the judges quite a while to decide who was the winner but finally they gave the victory to Do Hyung, much to the surprise of the audience

<OD>Karl “Psycho”Amoussou (184 lbs) vs. Heo Min-Seok (184.8 lbs)</OD>

Seok who fought a superfight in Korea where he defeated Radmir Gabdulin from Russiaon points with a split decision was in for a hard time because Amoussou’s reputation earned him the ring name “Psycho” and he carried it with honor. But Heo Min Seok proved to be a tough cookie because he managed to get a draw after two rounds. The extra round was just as difficult to judge, because the outcome was a split decision in favor of Amoussou.

<OD>Karl Louis Jean (197.4 lbs) vs. Lee Eun Su (204.2 lbs)</OD>

Louis Jean was a last minute replacement and although he fought brave in the first round, his endurance faded and after 4.22 in the second round his coach Bertrand Amoussou threw in the towel to prevent him from being knocked out by Lee. Lee - winner by TKO (punches).

<OD>Malick “Komodo” Ndiaye (278.4 lbs) vs. Lee Sang Soo (246.6 lbs)</OD>

Komodo is a really big guy, but Lee Sang Soo was an opponent to be reckoned with because he defeated Roman Zentsov with an armbar in a superfight when the Challenge came to Korea. The Frenchman attacked fiercely in the beginning of the round and it looked like he would not need much time to defeat Lee Sang Soo, but soon the tide changed and after some ground and pounding Lee applied an armbar and with just two seconds left in the first round Komodo tapped out.

<OD>Korea won with 3 - 2 </OD>

<OD>

Superfight 1:

Bobby Voelker (170 lbs) vs. Amir Rahnavardi (171,4 lbs)
</OD>

Hometown fighter Voelker made the crowd go wild when he was introduced. Rahnavardi who lived in Hollywood stayed cool and just smiled while he blew a few kisses to the audience. The problem was that Rahnavardi wasn’t told that he could not use the elbows and the Missouri office accepts elbows in mainfights, this fight was not under the IMA rules. Normally one wonders why a fight is called a Superfight, but this one deserved the name. After three rounds in which Amir showed an incredible ability to absorb punches, Bobby Voelker took the fight on decision.

<OD>

Superfight 2:

Mike Whitehead (257 lbs) vs. Leo Pla (204,8 lbs)
</OD>

Mike Whitehead made Pla tap with a guillotine choke after 1.20 minute in the first round

http://www.mmakc.com/

Ken Shamrock doesn't want to fight anymore, in fact he hasn't wanted to fight since June 19th, 2004. That's the last time he won. Since then Shamrock is 0-5 with all five fights ending via TKO in the first round. It's not that fact that he gets knocked out in those fights, it looks like he isn't even trying. Shamrock doesn't want to fight anymore, he wants to get paid.

Enter EliteXC and Kimbe Slice and all of a sudden Shamrock's mouth starts to water. It's perfect, very similar to fighting Tito Ortiz in Prime time, only better. This time it's on a major network and Kimbo won't want to take it to the ground like Ortiz. All Shamrock has to do is hype up the fight WWE style, act tough walking to the cage, get grazed by a right cross, and then fall down...Cha Ching.

So don't blink or go to the fridge, you might miss this one.

www.mmakc.com

What can I say, the Link FC delivered the goods again with their second event. If you live anywhere close to Wichita, fancy yourself a MMA fan, and didn't attend this show last night....well, what the hell were you doing? Unlike a lot of local shows the fights were very competitive, with four fights making it out of the first round. All the fights though were hard fought and exciting. Aside from the fight action, UFC Heavy Weight Champ Minotauro Nogueira was also on hand as a special guest. Nogueira was very gracious with his time taking a lot of pictures and signing a lot of autographs for the fans. be sure to check out the Link FC website www.linkfightingchampionship.com.
Brock Lesnar showed last night that he is a force to be reckoned with in the UFC Heavy Weight division. Lesnar man-handled a very tough Heath Herring for three rounds with a relentless ground and pound attack. That being said, Lesnar showed no class at all in the fight, and someone needs to remind him that this is not the WWE. For all the Kimbo Slice haters out there, you have never seen Slice show outright disrespect to his opponents or be anything but humble after one of his MMA wins. Lesnar however disrespected Herring throughout the fight and put on a great WWE performance during the Joe Rogan interview. On the clips from UFC.com of the post fight interview and press conference, never once did Lesnar credit Herring with being a tough competitor or give him a hats off of any kind.

Event by event coverage of Brock Lesnar being an A-hole:

1. Round one ends with Lesnar on top of Herring. Lesnar gets up and pushes Herring in the back.

2. Right before the bell sounds to end the fight, Lesnar starts pumping his fist in the air.

3. The fight ends and Lesnar gets up pointing at Herring and laughing in his face.

4. Lesnar acts like he is swinging a rope and lassoing Herring.

5. Lesnar acts like and idiot in the post fight interview with Joe Rogan:

Rogan: now coming into this sport...

(Lesnar jerks the mic from Rogan)

Lesnar: CAN YOU SEE ME NOW!!! CAN YOU SEE ME NOW!!!

Rogan: Give us your thoughts of where you feel you stand in the heavy weight division now.

Lesnar: I fell off the horse against Frank Mir and tonight I got on that stallion and rode it out of town baby!
        WHOO!!!

At this point I fully expected the John Ceda or HHH music to start playing.... or better yet, Lesnar's much older wife Sable, to jump in the cage and start stripping her clothes off.

If you didn't make it to this show, you missed out on an exciting night of fights. I counted four fights ending by rear naked choke, and three ending by tap due to strikes. It looked like every competitor came to fight, no tap was quick and no match seemed to be stacked in favor of one fighter. A match that really stood out to me was Kevin Callahan Vs. Jason Kunce in the 145 lb. class. Callahan looked to have Kunce in a some trouble early, but Kunce didn't quit and reversed position to locked in a rear choke for the hard fought win. Aside from the fights there were also several vendors on hand: Eye Win Fight Gear, Beat Down Boys, and Dillards selling the latest Tapout/Affliction shirts.

Results:

Bobby Tazok Vs. Brice Lehman
Lehman wins via tap out from strikes round 1

Cody Calhoon Vs. Jonathan Rouse
Calhoon wins via submission round 1

Josh Langton Vs. Donnel Bolton
Bolton wins via tap out from strike round 1

Kevin Callahan Vs. Jason Kunce
Kunce wins via submission round 1

David Williams Vs.
